Is National City Mortgage the same a national city bank? Im trying to find a National City in Oregon. i found one in lake oswego. but one site says its a National City Bank and one says its a National City Mortgage. Can i still go in and send money to someone in Pennsylvania? i just wanna send someone money from one national city bank to another. please help
Has any one been riped off by a mortgage company? I had made additional payments to National City Mortgage and applied to get relief of PMI and they would not cancell the payment. Even when I had payed my loan down to below 80% as they stated on their web site. Their site had the word "may" as to indicate this would not be that easy. PMI is a cash cow for banks and even when on faith you make all the required payments they still hold you hostage. To make matters worse they wanted to have me pay for an aprasel. This bank was unfair and all they wanted to do is pass the bulk to the PMI underwriter. Advice: Don't let this banK or anyother bank screw you, get a loan for 20%
ING Mortgage? I just read a few "answers" to someone's post about ING Mortgage, and I am confused. ING Mortgage is telling me hand's down that it is 695.00, plus odd days interest, and then the mortgage tax, and that is it. In their paperwork, they indicate "there will be some 3rd party fees" but when I ask them about it, they say "No, these are listed by law, but you (me the consumer) do not pay them, they do." However a mortgage guy @ National City Mortgage told me to BEWARE.... he said that they can't pay 3rd party fees themselves b/c it would be illegal. On different Yahoo answers, it supports what my National City Mortgage guy told me, but ING SWEARS that I will not have to. I would like to have it listed directly to me opinions from others on this site who either have applied for an ING mortgage, have one, or an expert. This is not clear - I'm sorry. Cna someone tell me of an experience with ING Mortgage or any intelligence you have on company?
Is money in National City Bank safe? I understand National City Bank (Cleveland, Hdqtrs) is in financial trouble primarily because of the subprime Home Mortgage deals that have gone and are going "sour". Will they go under or will they survuve?? If someone has money there, is it safe???
How likely are mortgage companies willing to change due dates or payment dates? I have 4 bills due on the 1st of the month which is a real pain since I get paid on the 30th or 31st which is last day of the month. This means my 4 bills are due the next day. I would like to see if these companies will allow me to push my due dates back about 2 or 3 days to give me enough time to actually sit down and make the payment. Luckily for me I use online payments or this would be an even larger issue if I were to have to mail a check in. Money is a bit tight right now so I am pretty much living paycheck to paycheck so I dont have the opportunity right now to pay them in advance, I have to wait until my check comes in before I can make my payment. One of the payments due is my mortgage and they dont tend to fart around with things like this, so I am wonder if anyone knows if National City Mortgage will in fact move my due date back 2 or 3 days. GE Online Service are the other two and Nationwide Insurance is the last one that all need to be moved. Think it can be done?
How many monthly payments do you have to miss before the mortgage lender attempts to Foreclose on a home? The answer that was given was either misleading, uninformed or confused. The Mortgage Industury, which supports flipping of houses, has changed the law on the Federal level where they can take your home with one missed payment. I do not who this 'expert' is. I lived through it with National City Bank. I missed one (singular payment. Although their 'Loss Mitigation Dept' try to work with me, the repayment to get back on track was $1,000, next month $4000 and the next $9,000. In the meantime they hired a foreclosure attorney which sent me threatening letters, but years end, the so-called amount to right the loan was $64 thousand dollars. You see, in West Jordan Utah, house prices skyrocketed from $130K to $350K. National City bought the home back from themselves for $108K. I had short sale offers as high as $122K. Instead I filed bankruptcy to stop the foreclosure on automatic stay. The Fed Bankruptcy Court let the house go in May 2004 to the NCM, profteering.
If a mortgage company is sold, does the buyer have to honor all former contracts? I am about to start construction on a house and have my constrcution loan thru National City, they will also be the owner of the mortgae when the loan is converted at the end of construction. If NC is sold before the loan gets converted, will the new buyer of NC have to honor the details of the loan agreement I had with NC, or will I be at risk of having to redo the mortgage loan and potentially have to pay a higher interest rate?
can a person get a mortgage loan with a credit score of 650? If so where? I have had credit trouble in the past. I am now trying to rebuild. I am finding it hard to get a mortgage loan or a major credit card. I have read stories about people getting loans with credit scores lower than mine. I found National City bank on a web site with stephen's life after bankruptcy newsletter. Where are people getting these loans, with low credit scores. I live in Alabama. I can't get a bank loan. I am not in bankruptcy. Please tell me the names of the mortgage companies that can work with me. I have read stories where people credit score is in the 500's. They are buying cars and homes right after they file bankrupt. Thank you
I have been approved for the mortgage, got final OK from the underwriter. what is the next in the process? I got approved for the mortgage through national city, and last week the loan officer said that I had the final ok from the underwriter. She said that all they needed was the appraisal (which was completed last week), the title work, my most recent bank statement, and home insurance. We are scheduled to close on the house on 12-1-07, and the loan officer said that she thought we were on the right track to getting it closed. Is it ok to start getting excited about the house or is there still a chance that it wont go through??? I already had a professional home inspection and made an repair amendment to the sales contract for those repairs.
How can a $120K house cost $1200/mo w/ a 6.7% rate at 30 y-fixed mortgage? Good friends of mine are about to become 1st time home owners and told me unflinchingly that their mortgage payment would be $1200/mo for a house less than $120K. This is through National City bank and not even a broker! They are using a 30 year fixed rate at 6.7%. How is this possible? I pointed out that using an amortization table their payments should be just under $800 excluding taxes and home owners insurance, neither of which could possibly explain the $400/month difference (they are living in the midwest in a lower tax area, estimated the taxes are about $1,000/yr). I am trying to find the right way to explain to them that they are being taken advantage of without jeopordizing our friendship, but I wanted to make sure there was nothing I was missing that could explain why they are paying $400/month more than I think they should based on that purchase price and rate. Thanks 1. Definitely a 30 year fixed, not a 15 year fixed 2. Not the property taxes, they live in the country of Ohio. Our taxes are low (for this house about 1,000 per year).
WIll mortgage underwriter give final approval? I was pre-approved for FHA home loan. Found house, accepted offer, had professional home inspection done, and national city loan officer stated that I was approved for the loan. She stated that the appraisal and title work was ordered, and she was waiting on final ok from underwriter. What things can keep me from getting final approval.
IF you have a home, Why would you not refinance to a lower rate? I am a loan officer for National City Mortgage. One of the largest banks in the US. Our rates are awesome, with no junk fees, or extra costs. SO my question is this, as I speak with home owners, what could be the possible reason for someone to turn down a refinance, if they can get a lower rate and save any where from $50-$200 a month? I am a bit confused and baffeled, so I figured why not ask some of you to see what your reasons could be to say no?
Advice from those who have done a deed in lieu!? Our story... We had to relocate in 8/07 for my husbands job. We put our house on the market in ILL in 8/07 and it still has not sold. We have lowered the price to the point we will get nothing or possibly even have to pay a bit to get rid of it. We are current on our payments right now, but we are running out of funds to keep paying for the house. I noticed on the HUD website you must be 31 days past due to qualify for a deed in lieu. I still think this seems like a viable option for us at this point. I would rather not go 7-8 months past due and have to foreclose then. Anyone out there that has done a deed in lieu I am looking for any advice on this process. How did it affect your credit? Right now we both have scores in the 700 range and have never had late payments on anything. What was the process like? Just in case anyone out there has dealt with National City Mortgage that is where our loan is. We can not refinance as we have not owned the home long enough to build any equity and our rate is already very good. I would really like to get advice from anyone who has done a deed in lieu and your thoughts after the process... THANK YOU!!!!!!
If your city had the weakest housing market, would you buy or rent? According to an article on Yahoo, Detroit is #1 for the weakest housing market. If you lived in an area where people couldn't give away homes for free, and houses are being foreclosed left and right, but you had to stay (for the time being) would you rent or buy? I am hesitant to invest in a house with the national housing market the way it is. A friend of my husband's bought a small house in a suburb of Detroit and invested thousands and thousands of dollars into it. I would be worried that if I needed to move, I would either lose money on the deal or wouldn't get a buyer. My mother in law has had her house up for sale for a year. My husband and I rent. Many say that is throwing money away, but in an unstable economy, it is nice to not be locked into a 30 year mortgage. Especially, when our unemployment rate is almost double the national average. My family and my husband's family are in Detroit. I hate it here, but moving isn't in the cards yet. The unemplyment rate is just under 8%. Large corporations are leaving left and right (ie. Comerica). We just had a government shutdown which led to an increase in taxes due to the state debt. Only Louisiana is worse off than we are, and that is due to a natural disaster (Hurricane Katrina). My husband and I have both been laid off numerous times. This past time, it took me almost 4 months to find a job. It's feast or famine. Hence, my hesitation.....
With the complete failure of Fannie Mae, Do the Democrats still want the government involved in health care? Doesn't this sound like how the Democrats are treating health care now? The Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) has launched a program to provide $1 trillion in financing to 10 million low- to moderate-income families buying homes by the year 2000. Fannie Mae also will be providing mortgage loans to inner-city residents. When it comes to having a piece of the American pie, the material evidence of home ownership has always ranked high on the lists of most people. Unfortunately, that dream has often been deferred for African-Americans. Studies by academicians and community activist groups detailing the high incidence of redlining and mortgage loan discrimination have led to sound bite exposure in the media, and a cynical approach to ... And go figure, and company that pay's NO TAXES, has to be bailed out. Not apples and oranges, complete apples. The government involved in lending, the government involved with insurance.
How is the real estate market in New York City (specifically, Queens)? I am looking to purchase a *cheap* coop in Queens and my real estate broker told me that although property is moving slower than normal, coops are still a hot commodity. i don't know if he's just saying this so that i will bid higher, but i would like some concrete facts on coops and real estate in general in New York. i hear all the time on the news about national averages on mortgages and foreclosures, but New York is a bit of a different animal so if anyone could point me to specific websites with more info, i would be very grateful. thanks a lot.
Should I buy this house? I currently work for a property management company that provides me with a free place to live. The problem is, they told us they are laying us off this next month and me and my husband have a huge dog so we cant go rent an apartment. It is nerve wrecking to live with the uncertainty of not knowing when we need to move out so we thought of buying a small home with a small yard for our dog. We found a 1 bed 1 bath in National City (in San Diego, CA) for 136K with seller paying closing costs. The house is 528 sq. feet but very cute. There is no driveway or garage. We could rent it out on a month to month lease until I get laid off. The mortgage would be 1077 per month which my husband can afford on his own even if I get laid off. I am hesitant to buy because prices keep going down but then again, interest seems to be going up too. I am confused. I need to sign if I am to accept the offer tomorrow. Any advice? The payment includes PITI, principal, taxes, insurance and insurance. This house has another bed and bath addition to the side of the house.

Just out of curiosity, I listed the home as a rental on Craigslist without pictures or exact address at $1090 per month and I got 20 interested parties in one day. I know I can rent it out for the full mortgage payment. The house has another bath and bedroom addition making the house a total of 2 bed 2 bath. Permits unknown.
When will we americans regain our national integrity? IMMIGRATION IN THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURY - THE CURSE OF CIVILIZED NATIONS AND DECENT PEOPLES. Immigration to America in the 17th to 19th century was by decent, hardworking, well intentioned people, heading to America with honorable intentions to build and contribute to society. They created a workable social system with benefits to the deserving and a society of well-intentioned and decent people. But no such people come any more. Now they come in droves, packing the major cities, causing an increase in crime, congestion, and taxes as real estate rents soar, parking is unavailable or exorbitantly high. Americans who took their entire lives to pay off their home mortgages, now find that the taxes on their homes are so high, they cant afford to live in them any more and the congestion so bad, they cant even find a place to park in front of their own homes. Many have to pack up and move out of the city, just to make ends meet, and then face the arduous daily hours of driving back and forth just to get to work and back home. That is, those that still have jobs, since as this goes on, jobs disappear, either right here where we get laid off, or the whole company moves out to a cheap labor country. And as the hordes make demands for energy needs, power needed to heat and light homes and buildings is insufficient, and cities black out, the demand for gas soars, heating prices skyrocket, and our own supply of gas becomes insufficient to meet our own needs, and we become victims of the arabs, who use the pumps to revenge our policies they don’t like. Even the price of food is soaring to feed these unwelcome parasites. They pile over the borders or by plane on visitor visas, preying on the good naturedness of Americans to provide a refuge for the oppressed, they connive the appearance of the downtrodden and persecuted, and then sit down comfortably and stay here, leeching off the health care system which faces bankruptcy in 20 years, the welfare system that us sucker u.s. taxpayers have to pick up the tab for, and which we spent decades to build. Social parasites from latin america, flock here to live free on us sucker taxpayers, dragging their families and relatives in, once they get green cards and then swamping the health care system with their third world illnesses and birth defects. And the other breed of latinos – criminals of the most evil intensities terrorizing communities in which they rob and kill. Thieves and common criminals from the countries of eastern Europe and the soviet union, hearing that there is still stuff on store shelves when stores close, that hasn’t been shoplifted or sold, come and steal, with impunity. Mafia organizations that control Russia and the countries of the former soviet union, setting up foreign crime systems that specialize in grand larceny, weaponry, even nuclear arms materials for sale, stolen from the old soviet system, available for sale to our enemies, raking them million$. Africans with strange ,deadly diseases walk in, causing epidemics and death to our gay citizens and to innocent people in general and swamping the health care system. Asians with alien religious philosophies, contrary to Christian monotheism, poisoning the minds of our youth. And they come and take our jobs away here in America, while employers, enticed by cheap labor, move their companies there, leaving us unemployed,. Terrorists walk in and go about their death tactics with ease and we shudder at what they will do to us next. All, contributing to crime, violence, social unrest. Finally, To add insult to these injuries to our nation, our government picks up the tab for hundreds of thousands of third world “students” to come, pack our universities tuition free at the expense of us US taxpayers ,while we Americans fall into debt to pay for our own children to get a college education. AND WE ARE EXPECTED TO PICK UP THE TAB WORLDWIDE FOR THEM, WHENEVER S--T HAPPENS ANYWHERE. What kind of fools are running this country? What kind of fools are we to let this go on? And WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LAW AND ORDER?
21 yr. old, and wanting to retire in 20 years or less. Is this possible? If so, how? I net $29k a year, which doesn't sound like a lot, but the cost of living in my city is way below the national average. I have no debt, besides my mortgage payment. Currently, about 45-50% of my income a month goes to bills. (Mortgage, Utilities, Phone, etc) If it isn't likely possible for me to retire in 20 years or less, what would be another good course of action for me? How should I invest? Roth IRA? or 401k? etc?
Please Read. What does it mean to you with the current state of the union and world? Were we warned? Farewell Address Farewell Radio and Television Address to the American People by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, January 17, 1961. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My fellow Americans: Three days from now, after half a century in the service of our country, I shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the Presidency is vested in my successor. This evening I come to you with a message of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my countrymen. Like every other citizen, I wish the new President, and all who will labor with him, Godspeed. I pray that the coming years will be blessed with peace and prosperity for all. Our people expect their President and the Congress to find essential agreement on issues of great moment, the wise resolution of which will better shape the future of the Nation. My own relations with the Congress, which began on a remote and tenuous basis when, long ago, a member of the Senate appointed me to West Point, have since ranged to the intimate during the war and immediate post-war period, and, finally, to the mutually interdependent during these past eight years. In this final relationship, the Congress and the Administration have, on most vital issues, cooperated well, to serve the national good rather than mere partisanship, and so have assured that the business of the Nation should go forward. So, my official relationship with the Congress ends in a feeling, on my part, of gratitude that we have been able to do so much together. II We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment. III Throughout America's adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among people and among nations. To strive for less would be unworthy of a free and religious people. Any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt both at home and abroad. Progress toward these noble goals is persistently threatened by the conflict now engulfing the world. It commands our whole attention, absorbs our very beings. We face a hostile ideology-global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose, and insidious in method. Unhappily the danger it poses promises to be of indefinite duration. To meet it successfully, there is called for, not so much the emotional and transitory sacrifices of crisis, but rather those which enable us to carry forward steadily, surely, and without complaint the burdens of a prolonged and complex struggle-with liberty at stake. Only thus shall we remain, despite every provocation, on our charted course toward permanent peace and human betterment. Crises there will continue to be. In meeting them, whether foreign or domestic, great or small, there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties. A huge increase in newer elements of our defense; development of unrealistic programs to cure every ill in agriculture; a dramatic expansion in basic and applied research-these and many other possibilities, each possibly promising in itself, may be suggested as the only way to the road we wish to travel. But each proposal must be weighed in the light of a broader consideration: the need to maintain balance in and among national programs-balance between the private and the public economy, balance between cost and hoped for advantage-balance between the clearly necessary and the comfortably desirable; balance between our essential requirements as a nation and the duties imposed by the nation upon the individual; balance between action of the moment and the national welfare of the future. Good judgment seeks balance and progress; lack of it eventually finds imbalance and frustration. The record of many decades stands as proof that our people and their government have, in the main, understood these truths and have responded to them well, in the face of stress and threat. But threats, new in kind or degree, constantly arise. I mention two only. IV A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction. Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peace time, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea. Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United States corporations. This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every state house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades. In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government. Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been over shadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite. It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system-ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society. V Another factor in maintaining balance involves the element of time. As we peer into society's future, we-you and I, and our government-must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow. VI Down the long lane of the history yet to be written America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect. Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield. Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose difference, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose. Because this need is so sharp and apparent I confess that I lay down my official responsibilities in this field with a definite sense of disappointment. As one who has witnessed the horror and the lingering sadness of war-as one who knows that another war could utterly destroy this civilization which has been so slowly and painfully built over thousands of years-I wish I could say tonight that a lasting peace is in sight. Happily, I can say that war has been avoided. Steady progress toward our ultimate goal has been made. But, so much remains to be done. As a private citizen, I shall never cease to do what little I can to help the world advance along that road. VII So-in this my last good night to you as your President-I thank you for the many opportunities you have given me for public service in war and peace. I trust that in that service you find somethings worthy; as for the rest of it, I know you will find ways to improve performance in the future. You and I-my fellow citizens-need to be strong in our faith that all nations, under God, will reach the goal of peace with justice. May we be ever unswerving in devotion to principle, confident but humble with power, diligent in pursuit of the Nation's great goals. To all the peoples of the world, I once more give expression to America's prayerful and continuing aspiration: We pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its spiritual blessings; that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love.

Is Obama Disigenuous? http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23643866-5013948,00.html The illusion that is Barack Obama * Font Size: Decrease Increase * Print Page: Print Fred Siegel | May 05, 2008 POLITICAL campaigning necessarily produces a wide gap between words and deeds. This is the price of bringing together a broad coalition with disparate interests. All effective politicians are at times authentically insincere or sincerely inauthentic. Exaggeration, embellishment, overstatement, doubletalk, deception and lies presented as metaphorical truths are the order of the day. So, of course, Barack Obama is no different. He exaggerates the credit he deserves for a limited piece of ethics-reform legislation. He embellishes when he presents himself as having had a consistent record on the Iraq war when in fact he's done a fair amount of zigzagging. He engages in doubletalk when, on free trade and Iraq, he tells the yokels one thing and the policy people another. He overstates when he presents his minimal accomplishments in the Illinois Senate as proof of his stature. He engages in systematic deception when he says he doesn't take money from lobbyists. He presents a lie as metaphorical truth when he says it was the 1965 bloody Sunday attacks on peaceful civil rights protesters in Selma, Alabama, that inspired his parents to marry. (They had been married for years already.) All of this is unappealing, but also unexceptional. What makes it different is that there's not just a gap but a chasm between his actions and his professed principles, which would normally kill a candidacy. And because his deeds are so few, the disparity is all the more salient. Obama, far more than the others, is the "judge me by what I say and not what I do" candidate. He wants to be the conscience of the country without necessarily having one himself. The disparity between Obama's rhetoric of transcendence and his conventional Chicago racial and patronage politics is a leitmotiv of his political career. In New York, politicians (Al Sharpton excepted) are usually forced to pay at least passing tribute to universal principles and the ideal of clean government. But Chicago, until recently a city of Lithuanians, blacks and Poles governed by Irishmen on the patronage model of the Italian Christian Democrats, is the city of political and cultural tribalism. Blacks adapted to the tribalism and the corrupt patronage politics that accompanied it. Historically, one of the ironies of Chicago politics is that the clean-government candidates have been the most racist, while those most open to black aspirations have been the most corrupt. When the young Jesse Jackson received his first audience with then mayor Richard Daley Sr - impervious to the universalism of the civil rights movement in its glory - offered him a job as a toll-taker. Jackson thought the offer demeaning but in time adapted. In Chicago, racial reform has meant that the incumbent mayor, Richard M. Daley, has been cutting blacks in on the loot. Louis Farrakhan, Jackson, Jeremiah Wright and Obama are all, in part, the expression of that politics. It hasn't always worked for Chicago, which, under the pressure of increasing taxes to pay for bloated government, is losing its middle class. But it has served the city's political class admirably. For all his Camelot-like rhetoric, Obama is a product, in significant measure, of the political culture that Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass described: "We've had our chief of detectives sent to prison for running the Outfit's (the mob's) jewellery-heist ring. And we've had white guys with Outfit connections get $100 million in affirmative action contracts from their drinking buddy, Mayor Richard Daley ... That's the Chicago way." At no point did Obama, the would-be saviour of US politics, challenge this corruption, except for face-saving gestures as a legislator. He was, in his own Harvard law way, a product of it. Why, you may ask, did the operators of Chicago's political machine support Obama? Part of the answer was given long ago by the then boss of Chicago, Jake Arvey. When asked why he made Adlai Stevenson - a man, as with Obama, more famous for speeches than for accomplishments - his party's gubernatorial candidate in 1948, Arvey is said to have replied that he needed to "perfume the ticket". Obama first played a perfuming role as a state senator. His mentor, Emil Jones, the machine-made president of the Senate, allowed him to sponsor a minor ethics bill. In return, Obama made sure to send plenty of pork to Jones's district. When asked about pork-barrel spending, Jones famously replied: "Some call it pork; I call it steak." Obama repaid the generosity. When he had a chance to back clean Democratic candidates for president of the Cook County board of supervisors and Illinois governor, he stayed with the allies of the Outfit. The gubernatorial candidate he backed, Rod Blagojevich, is under federal investigation, in part because of his relationship with Tony Rezko, the man who helped Obama buy his house. The Chicago way has delivered politically for Obama even this year. Ninety per cent of his popular-vote lead over Hillary Clinton comes from Illinois, and two-thirds of that 90 per cent comes just from Cook County. Some of this advantage came from the efforts of Obama's political ally, the flame-throwing reverend James Meeks, a political force in his own right. Meeks, who mocks black moderates as "niggers", is an Illinois state senator, the pastor of a mega-church and a strong supporter of Jackson's powerful political operation, which has put its vote-pulling muscle squarely behind the Obama campaign. It was only with Obama's remark about bitter, white, working-class, small-town voters that we saw his difficulties appealing beyond the machine's reach. He won his US Senate race in 2004 not only because his opponents self-destructed but also because of the machine's ability to deliver votes. In Pennsylvania, he has lacked such assistance and the campaigning has not gone nearly so well. First, Obama pretended to be a tenpin bowler and scored a 37. Then, appearing before a supposedly closed San Francisco audience, he complained that small-town Pennsylvanians "cling to guns or religion or antipathy towards people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment, as a way to explain their frustrations". This is the man who belongs to a church built on bitterness, rancour and conspiratorial fear. During the Wright affair, Obama not only repeatedly lied about what he knew and when but violated the spirit of the civil rights movement in its mid-1960s glory. When, as a young man, I was on the periphery of the movement, there was an unwritten rule that if people told racist jokes or speakers engaged in defamatory rhetoric, you needed to register your immediate disapproval by confronting the speaker or ostentatiously walking out. Wright's "black theology" is essentially a Christianised version of Malcolm X's ideology of hate. But for 20 years, Obama, who had planned to run for mayor of Chicago, kept silent about the close, if at times competitive, relationship between Wright, whose 8000-member mega-church gave him his political base, and Farrakhan. His ambition overrode his moral integrity. As part of his "black value system", Wright attacked whites for their "middle classism", materialism, and "greed in a world of need". Obama sounded similar notes in his recent address at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, in which he laid the blame for the sub-prime mortgage crisis on those who had "embraced an ethic of greed, corner cutting and inside dealing". But that's exactly what Obama did in buying his luxurious house. Given the choice of purchasing a less expensive home or getting into bed with his fundraiser-cum-slumlord-cum-fixer Rezko, Obama chose the latter. Then again, the oppressed of Trinity United Church of Christ are building Wright a $US1.6 million ($1.7million), 960sqm home complete with four-car garage, whirlpool and butler's pantry. This house, which backs on to a golf course, is to sit in Tinley Park, a gated community in southwest Chicago that is 93 per cent white. The Obamas' charitable giving is consistent with Wright's talking Left while living Right. Obama and his wife are quite well off. They had an estimated income of $US1.2 million from 2000 to 2004. But the man who preaches compassion and mutuality gave all of 1 per cent of that income to charity during those years. Most of that went to Wright's church. There is a similar chasm when it comes to Obama's claim to post-partisanship. His achievements in reaching out to moderate voters are largely proleptic. But words are not deeds and, although Obama has few concrete achievements to his name, his voting record hardly suggests an ability to rise above Left v Right. In the Illinois Senate, he made a specialty of voting present, but after his first two years in the US Senate, National Journal's analysis of rollcall votes found that he was more liberal than 86 per cent of his colleagues. His voting record has only moved further Left since then. The liberal Americans for Democratic Action gives him a 97.5 per cent rating, while National Journal ranks him the most liberal member of the Senate. By comparison, Clinton, who occasionally votes with the Republicans, ranks 16th. Obama is such a down-the-line partisan that, according to Congressional Quarterly, in the past two years he has voted with the Democrats more often than did the party's majority leader, Harry Reid. Likewise, for all his talk of post-racialism, Obama has played, with the contrivance of the press, traditional South Side Chicago racial politics. The day after his surprise loss in New Hampshire, and in anticipation of the South Carolina primary, with its heavily black electorate, South Side congressman Jesse Jackson Jr - Obama's national co-chairman - appeared on MSNBC to argue, in a prepared statement, that Clinton's teary moment on the campaign trail reflected her deep-seated racism. "Those tears," said Jackson, "have to be analysed ... They have to be looked at very, very carefully in light of Katrina, in light of other things that Mrs Clinton did not cry for, particularly as we head to South Carolina, where 45 per cent of African-Americans will participate in the Democratic contest ... We saw tears in response to her appearance, so that her appearance brought her to tears, but not hurricane Katrina, not other issues." In other words, whites who are at odds with, or who haven't delivered for, Chicago politicians can be obliquely accused of racism on the flimsiest basis, but pillars of local black politics such as Wright, with his exclusivist racial theology, are beyond criticism. Liberals love Obama's talk of taking on powerful financial interests. But here , too, he is rather slippery. In his Cooper Union speech, he denounced in no uncertain terms the "special interests" of people on Wall Street (who are well represented among his campaign donors). He, of course, had an opportunity to push for repealing the privileged tax treatment of private equity firms when that question was before Charles Grassley's Senate subcommittee - but he simply made a pro-forma statement in favour of doing so and disappeared. Nationally, as in Chicago, Obama the self-styled reformer never crosses swords with any of his putative foes. To pick another example, he has attacked "predatory" sub-prime lenders while taking roughly $US1.3 million in contributions from companies in that line of business. Obama is the internationalist opposed to free trade. He is the friend of race-baiters who thinks Don Imus deserved to be fired. He is the proponent of courage in the face of powerful interests who lacked the courage to break with Wright (until Wednesday). He is the man who would lead our efforts against terrorism yet was friendly with Bill Ayers, the unrepentant 1960s terrorist. He is the post-racialist supporter of affirmative action. He is the enemy of Big Oil who takes money from executives at Exxon-Mobil, Shell and British Petroleum. Obama has, in a sense, represented a new version of the invisible man, a candidate whose colour obscures his failings. But so far, the wild discrepancy between Obama's words and his deeds, and between his enormous ambitions and his minimal accomplishments, doesn't seem to have fazed his core supporters, who apparently suffer from a severe case of cognitive dissonance. Like cultists who rededicate themselves when the cult's prophecies have been falsified, his fans redouble their delusions in the face of his obvious hypocrisy. That is because Obama, in the imagination of many of his fans in the public and the press, is both a deduction from what was - the failures of the Bush administration and the scandals of the Clintons - and an expression of what should be. The ideal, the aspiration, is so rhetorically appealing that it has been assumed to be true. They remind one of Woodrow Wilson's answer when asked if his plan for a League of Nations was practicable: "If it won't work, it must be made to work." Do all USA Senators have problems with telling the truth? With economic troubles dominating the race, McCain opened the new line of criticism against Romney at his first event of the day in Fort Myers, Fla., and sought to shift the campaign back to his strength, national security, and away from Romney's, the economy. First, he slapped at Romney without naming him during a question-and-answer session with Floridians, saying: "Now, one of my opponents wanted to set a date for withdrawal that would have meant disaster." Minutes later to reporters, the Arizona senator was more direct: "If we surrender and wave a white flag, like Senator Clinton wants to do, and withdraw, as Governor Romney wanted to do, then there will be chaos, genocide, and the cost of American blood and treasure would be dramatically higher." Asked about the comment in Land O' Lakes, Fla., Romney bristled. "That's dishonest, to say that I have a specific date. That's simply wrong," he said. "That is not the case. I've never said that." The former Massachusetts governor added: "I know he's trying desperately to change the topic from the economy and trying to get back to Iraq, but to say something that's not accurate is simply wrong — and he knows better." Later in Sun City, Fla., McCain stuck to his assessment and said: "The apology is owed to the young men and women serving this nation in uniform." He said he was quoting Romney as favoring a "timetable" for withdrawal and argued that he was not misquoting Romney, saying, "Clearly, the impression was that he was ready to set a date for withdrawal." But Romney quotes circulated by McCain's campaign didn't show Romney making that exact comment — nor did aides back up McCain's earlier comment that suggested that Romney "wanted to set a date for withdrawal." In an interview with ABC News in 2007, Romney said: "There's no question that the president and (Iraqi) Prime Minister al-Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about. But those shouldn't be for public pronouncement. You don't want the enemy to understand how long they have to wait in the weeds until you're going to be gone." While Romney has never set a public date for withdrawal, he has said that he agrees with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, that U.S. troops could move to more of an oversight role in 2008. McCain, for his part, has been a staunch supporter of the Iraq war and advocated more troops on the ground for years before Bush embraced that position last year and ramped up the number of U.S. forces in Iraq. The buildup helped curb violence in Iraq, and McCain has not been shy about claiming credit for the strategy's success. Romney aides labeled McCain's charge "stunningly false," while McCain aides portrayed his Iraq comments as part of a broader effort in the coming days to question Romney's leadership, foreign policy experience and judgment. A former venture capitalist and business consultant, Romney has spent the past week arguing that he is the Republican best able to right a troubled economy, given his 25-year record in the private sector. He's argued that McCain, who has spent much of his life in the military and in Congress, doesn't have the qualifications necessary to lead the country out of a potential recession. McCain, in turn, has sought to beat back Romney on the issue by arguing that a president needs to be ready to lead and qualified on both national security and economics, and he offers both — despite having previously acknowledged that the economy is not his strongest suit. He also sought to rebut Romney's criticisms in an unusual fashion: he dispatched high-profile surrogates to talk with the press corps traveling with the former governor. Among them: former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift. She boarded the Romney press bus to repeat similar criticisms to reporters. ____ Associated Press Writers Glen Johnson in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Libby Quaid in Fort Myers, Fla., contributed to this report. * Email Story * IM Story * Printable View RECOMMEND THIS STORY Recommend It: Average (196 votes) 2.7 stars » Recommended Stories Full Coverage: 2008 Presidential Election Off the Wires * Obama runs away with SC primary AP, 3 minutes ago * Racial divide could hurt Obama beyond SC AP, 4 minutes ago News Stories * Obama wins in South Carolina at The Chicago Tribune (reg. req'd), Jan 27 * Obama wins South Carolina at Politico, Jan 27 Opinion & Editorials * Obama's Big Win in SC a Referendum on Clintons The Nation via Yahoo! Driver in fatal Carson crash charged does immagrtion have something to do with this twice deported? A motorist's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when his speeding truck plowed into a man's car, killing the man, in Carson last week, sheriff's deputies said Tuesday. Quirino Mateo Antonio, 30, of Lomita, who was driving 95 mph with a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, was charged Tuesday with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and drunken driving causing death and injury. The legal limit for driving in California is 0.08. "He's facing a lot of time," Carson sheriff's traffic Investigator Jon Tedder said. The Jan. 8 crash killed Juan Gabriel Ontiveros, a 32-year-old husband and father of four who was on his way home from his trucking job in Wilmington at 3:30 a.m. Investigators said Antonio was at the wheel of a Toyota Tacoma that hit Ontiveros' 1987 Cadillac Coupe Deville broadside at Sepulveda Boulevard and Wilmington Avenue. Investigators do not know if Antonio ran a red light. The intersection does not have red-light cameras, which would have taken photographs as the crash occurred. Deputies know Antonio's speed because his truck's speedometer froze when it hit the passenger side of Ontiveros' car without braking, Tedder said. The truck, heading west on Sepulveda, barreled through the Cadillac, which was traveling north on Wilmington. The collision completely knocked the Cadillac's body off the frame, bending it into a U shape. "The force of the collision was so great, Ontiveros' body hitting the side door broke the door latches and the door bolts," Tedder said. Ontiveros, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car into the street. He landed 20 feet away. Had he been wearing the seat belt, Ontiveros would have been burned because the Cadillac burst into flames, Tedder said. Antonio, who was hospitalized along with his passenger, had attended a party earlier in the evening. A case of beer was also found in his truck. Some bottles were opened and some were unopened. Many shattered in the crash, Tedder said. "He was confused as to where he was," Tedder said. "He thought he was in Harbor City. He thought he was at Sepulveda and Vermont instead of Sepulveda and Wilmington." Antonio works as banquet manager at the Bluewater Grill in Redondo Beach. A manager declined to comment. Antonio pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his arraignment at the Compton courthouse. Commissioner Ron Slick ordered him held on $500,000 bail. His attorney, Philip DeLuca, did not return a message. State Department of Motor Vehicles records show the Mexican national had obtained a driver's license in February 2003, but state authorities later deemed it invalid. Records show officials had made a request that he show proof of his Social Security number to validate the license. That request remained current Tuesday. In August 2003, Antonio was deported from the United States after he was detained in San Ysidro and determined to be an illegal immigrant, authorities said. Antonio was ordered to leave the country and told he could not return legally for five years. Ontiveros' family held his funeral Monday, calling for an ambulance when his mother fainted three times during the service, said his brother-in-law, Efren Hernandez. Ontiveros and his wife, Juanita, had been married for 17 years. Together, they had four children - a 16-year-old girl and boys ages 14, 13 and 8. They bought a two-bedroom home a year ago. He worked two trucking jobs to pay the mortgage. Hernandez said his sister has accepted the fact that she will raise the children alone. "My brother-in-law wanted them to have a profession," Hernandez said. "She is going to try to keep his promise to her kids to help them go to college. She has accepted he is dead. It's still painful." http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_7983087

Can someone post one answer just so I can get this off my "open" list. I have this listed twice accidentally. If you answer I'll vote you "best response" but put something somewhat intelligent sounding.
